«Look at my hands and feet and see that it is I myself»
Today, the Gospel still refers us to the Resurrection of the Lord, when the two disciples of Emmaus are going to Jerusalem and, once there, while explaining how the Lord made himself known to them, the Resurrected appears in their midst. But his presence is disconcerting. On the one hand, it provokes a great fright on them, to the point «they thought they were seeing a ghost» (Lk 24:37) but, on the other, his body pierced by the nails and the spear, is an eloquent testimony that he was the very Jesus, the Crucified one: «Look at my hands and feet and see that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves that a ghost has no flesh and bones as I have» (Lk 24:39).
«Lord, show us the light of your face!», sings the psalm of today's liturgy. Yes, for Jesus «then opened their minds to understand the Scriptures» (Lk 24:45). It is quite urgent. It is absolutely necessary the disciples have a clear and profound understanding of the Scriptures, for as St. Jerome tells us, «Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ».
But understanding the word of God is not something we can manage privately, or within a gathering of friends or acquaintances. The Lord revealed the meaning of the Scriptures to the Church gathered in that Paschal community presided over by Peter and the other Apostles, who had been appointed by the Master so that «repentance and forgiveness in his name would be proclaimed to all the nations» (Lk 24:47).
Therefore, to be witnesses to the real Christ it is urgent that —in the first place— the disciples learn how to recognize his Passion scarred Body. An ancient author makes the following recommendation to us: «He, who understands that our Pasch has been sacrificed for him, has also to understand that his life starts when Christ died to redeem us». Furthermore, the apostle has to intelligently understand the Scriptures, read under the light of the Spirit of truth spilled over into the Church.

stronger than death and love more powerful than hatred.
May your faithful people bear the fruit
of this Easter season in a deep faith,
constant hope and enduring love.

«Mirad mis manos y mis pies; soy yo mismo»
Hoy, el Evangelio todavía nos sitúa en el domingo de la resurrección, cuando los dos de Emaús regresan a Jerusalén y, allí, mientras unos y otros cuentan que el Señor se les ha aparecido, el mismo Resucitado se les presenta. Pero su presencia es desconcertante. Por un lado provoca espanto, hasta el punto de que ellos «creían ver un espíritu» (Lc 24,37) y, por otro, su cuerpo traspasado por los clavos y la lanzada es un testimonio elocuente de que se trata del mismo Jesús, el crucificado: «Mirad mis manos y mis pies; soy yo mismo. Palpadme y ved que un espíritu no tiene carne y huesos como veis que yo tengo» (Lc 24,39).
«Haz brillar sobre nosotros la luz de tu rostro, Señor», canta el salmo de la liturgia de hoy. Efectivamente, Jesús «abrió sus inteligencias para que comprendieran las Escrituras» (Lc 24,45). Es del todo urgente. Es necesario que los discípulos tengan una precisa y profunda comprensión de las Escrituras, ya que, en frase de san Jerónimo, «ignorar las Escrituras es ignorar a Cristo».
Pero esta compresión de la palabra de Dios no es un hecho que uno pueda gestionar privadamente, o con su ongregación de amigos y conocidos. El Señor desveló el sentido de las Escrituras a la Iglesia en aquella comunidad pascual, presidida por Pedro y los otros Apóstoles, los cuales recibieron el encargo del Maestro de que «se predicara en su nombre (...) a todas las naciones» (Lc 24,47).
Para ser testigos, por tanto, del auténtico Cristo, es urgente que los discípulos aprendan -en primer lugar- a reconocer su Cuerpo marcado por la pasión. Precisamente, un autor antiguo nos hace la siguiente recomendación: «Todo aquel que sabe que la Pascua ha sido sacrificada para él, ha de entender que su vida comienza cuando Cristo ha muerto para salvarnos». Además, el apóstol tiene que comprender inteligentemente las Escrituras, leídas a la luz del Espíritu de la verdad derramado sobre la Iglesia.

fuerte que la muerte y el amor
más poderoso que el odio.
Que tu pueblo fiel dé el fruto
de esta temporada pascual
con una fe profunda,
una esperanza constante
y un amor perdurable.
